Hello again oh manly followers of all things oils. I was sitting here earlier today looking at my website and doing a little word adjustment here, a new picture there, I am even adding some videos. It was then that I realized it was something missing…. Blends! I have listed the absolute manliest oils on the planet. I have also listed diffuser recipes for men, and even manly things to do with some individual oils. But no blends. So let’s fix it and see if I can build a list a good Essential Oil Blends for Men.
As usual, I will start with some of the blends that I use on a daily basis, and I use these because they seem to work. Then I will undertake some research and see if I can’t come up with a few other that I haven’t thought of, but it might be helpful to you guys. So grab an ice-cold beverage, turn the football right down, probably just so that the neighbors can’t hear it anymore, and let’s explore my 15 Essential Oil Blends for Men.
Oh, and to save you some time I have categorized them a little too so if you are looking for a particular area then click on the Table of Contents below and off you go!
Table of Contents
Practical man-blends
Let’s start with some practical blends that do real stuff with oils in a chemical free manner. I have used or tested every one of these and am happy to report success, or near enough to for it to make this list. Let’s check them out!
Blend 1 – Sticky residue remover
To remove that sticky residue once a sticker or tape has been ripped off from whatever surface it was stuck to:
Mix:
- 3 drops Lemon
- 3 drops Eucalyptus Radiata
Use:
Mix them together onto a plate and then rub gently onto the sticky area until it is removed. Take care to ensure that you test on a small section first, especially on varnished wood or some plastics.
Note: Tea tree may also work as a substitute to Eucalyptus if you have it.
Did it work?
We used it after removing some Captain America stickers from the top of my laptop (my son’s doing) and it worked a treat!
Blend 2 – Sore feet blend
I have discussed a number of these blends in my posts on my Sore Feet and Muscle Soreness mansperiments. This is another I use if I have been on my feet all day, which we often do here if we are at the beach or a BBQ at the headland.
Mix:
- 4 drops Copaiba
- 3 drops Peppermint
- 3 drops Joint Support from Rocky Mountain Oils (Neem, Lemongrass, Peppermint, Black Cumin, Helichrysum italicum, and Black Pepper)
- Top up with Grapeseed oil (or 10 ml if not in a glass roller bottle)
Use:
Mix together and rub onto ankles, feet and calves as required. For best results, massage thoroughly.
Did it work?
My wife came up with this one when I complained about sore feet and wanted to use my muscle blend. She added Cedarwood as it is supposedly a good relaxant when used in massage. It also ads a manliness to the smell as well. I love it and can definitely feel a soothing on my feet when it is used. Maybe the oily massage has more effect, but I don’t care… This is a good one!
Blend 3 – Jetlag blend
Again, another magical concoction from my amazing wife. I traveled overseas recently and was given this jetlag mix as I walked out the door…
Mix:
- 10 drops Lavender
- 10 drops Cedarwood
- Top up with Grapeseed oil (or 10 ml if not in a glass roller bottle)
Use:
Mix together and rub onto wrists, neck and behind the ears.
Did it work?
I suffer shocking jetlag. I usually spend days in that tired, ‘just awake’ haze and then lie awake a night wondering if I will ever sleep again? This one really did help me. I fully admit that I didn’t think it would, but it really did. I felt much better during the day and slept like a baby at night…
Interesting to note here that I sort of see why it works with the Cedarwood. In my last post of essential oils that keep me awake, I placed Cedarwood in the fail column due to the fact that it did not keep me awake at all… maybe something in that.
Note: You can substitute the Cedarwood for Ginger or add it to the mix if you have it… Ginger is often used for this kind of thing. We just didn’t have it in the house at the time.
Blend 4 – Insect blend
This is another variation on blends and oils I have discussed for the management of insects. In the past I have discussed the use of Lemon and Peppermint for this purpose. This one is a blend that we have developed purely as we like the aroma. “Ohh, that is a manly one for you” was my wife’s comment.
Mix:
- 5 drops Bug Away from Rocky Mountain Oils (Citronella, Cedarwood Atlas, Lavender, Lemongrass, and Thyme)
- 5 drops Orange
- Top up with Grapeseed oil (or 10 ml if not in a glass roller bottle)
Use:
Mix together and rub onto exposed skin.
Note: This recipe can be expanded and added to water/witch hazel or alcohol and a spray bottle for greater coverage. Or purchase as a roll-on for more personal use.
Did it work?
This has become a staple in our house. We spend a lot of time outside in summer and we live close to the beach meaning there are lots and lots of biteys around. If there is a mozzie within a 5km radius I will get bitten, but not when I am wearing this.
Blend 5 – Smelly shoe blend
No real explanation needed here…
Mix:
- 3 drops Lemon
- 3 drops Majestic Breeze from Rocky Mountain Oils (Spruce, Pine, Cedarwood, Ylang Ylang, and Frankincense)
- 2 cotton balls
Use:
Drop oils directly onto the cotton balls and place in your shoes overnight .
Did it work?
Sure, it worked well enough. But I would have to admit to a slight lingering of man-shoe odor, I did try this on my stinky beach shoes. I often wear them without socks so I was a little hard on it to start with. It would probably be more than adequate for business or sports shoes that are always worn with socks. I will add more purification next time I think.
Note: You could substitute Tea Tree, Eucalyptus or Peppermint for the Purification if you needed to here.
Manly essential oil cologne Blends
So next we have some extra manly essential oil colognes. These are a little more complicated than usual blends due to the fact that when we are using essential oils as a cologne we need to overcome their volatility. This volatility means that if we put oils directly onto the skin the aroma dissipates fairly quickly. We could use a carrier oil, however that oily feel is not always ideal. Hence, we need to use a perfume quality alcohol or mixer or witch hazel. There are some fairly complex essential oil Cologne recipes around which I will leave for another day. Here I have chosen a couple of the simpler ones:
Blend 6 – Woodsman cologne
We have found all the wood and put it in a single cologne:
Mix:
- 6 drops Cedarwood
- 5 drops Bergamot
- 5 drops Sacred Sandalwood
- 20ml alcohol/witch hazel
Use:
Mix them together and rub onto wrists, behind the ears and the neck.
Note: You can use water for colognes with the oils if you wish. The aroma will just not last as long. If I am being honest, Vodka is a very good substitute for the more expensive perfume purpose alcohol, just add a few more drops of each oil.
Did it work?
I really like this aroma so I have included it here for its manliness! The Bergamot adds a hint of citrus to the woodsy scents of the other two oils.
Blend 7 – Shower fresh cologne
This one is in complete contrast to blend 6 for that shower fresh man-smell
Mix:
- 3 drops Northern Lights Black Spruce
- 4 drops Lemon
- 20ml alcohol/witch hazel
Use:
Mix them together and rub onto wrists, behind the ears and the neck.
Did it work?
This is another favorite. I use this one in the diffuser a bit too. the Spruce cuts the lemon and really does smell ‘fresh’. Well, what I think fresh smells like anyway. You could also use Pine or Sandalwood here too instead.
Hairy blends
Hair loss is the scourge of men worldwide. And like most forms of alternative treatment in this world, essential oils are commonly accepted as being able to play a part in the reduction of hair loss or the promotion of new hair growth. I cannot test this one but I have tried a couple of the blends in my hair purely for the sake of writing from an informed perspective. Anyway, here are some manly blends for the head!
Blend 8 – Hair growth
Getting a little thin on top? Try this chemical free blend to see if you can get kick those follicles into gear.
Mix:
- 12 drops Rosemary
- 10 drops Lavender
- 10 drops Lemongrass
- 20ml Jojoba oil for rub or 20ml chemical free/odorless shampoo
Use:
For a scalp massage: massage into scalp and hair anywhere between once a day or three times a week whichever suits. Leave in for 20 minutes and wash out.
In your shampoo: massage into hair and scalp in the shower at a frequency that suits you and leave in for 20 minutes or so.
Did it work?
Ummmm dunno, I did use the massage blend just to try it out and it feels pretty good. The oils chosen however are done so for the fact that they are supposed to be good for scalp care namely:
- Rosemary. Initial studies have proven favorable to the abilities of Rosemary oil to assist in hair growth (without any real certainty).
- Lavender. The use of Lavender in this area center on its abilities to cleanse the skin and kill germs around the follicles indirectly promoting hair growth. At least that is what the studies on mice found. No sign of human proof just yet however.
- Lemongrass. Lemongrass is all about the dandruff control. As with lavender, it clears the scalp allowing the follicles to go nuts!
So, some proof and some speculation but that doesn’t always mean anything when it comes to essential oils. After all you have nothing to lose really (pardon the pun)…
Blend 9 – Hair health
Keep your man mane thick, healthy and oil free with this little number:
Mix:
- 25 drops Cedarwood
- 20 drops Rosemary
- 20 drops Sage
- 15 drops Roman Chamomile
- 30ml carrier oil (for this recipe, I suggest half and half jojoba and grapeseed oil)
Use:
For a scalp massage: massage into scalp and hair anywhere between once a day or three times a week whichever suits. Leave in for 20 minutes and wash out.
Did it work?
I have to admit, I did like the feel of my hair after this one. I don’t have any Jojoba oil at the moment so I just used grapeseed but it was nice. Felt just like it had been washed in really soft water and the aroma is pretty good, which is something considering how unappealing Rosemary is on it own. And I wasn’t itchy the next day. The oils used:
- Rosemary. As above, it is supposedly good for promotion of hair growth.
- Cedarwood. It Helps to stimulate the hair follicles by increasing circulation to the scalp. A Scottish study also found Cedarwood to be good for hair growth (along with Rosemary, Thyme and Lavender if you are looking for substitutes).
- Sage. Another oil that stimulates the scalp and promotes hair growth. It is listed in EVERY page I read to do with good essential oils for hair. Unfortunately, I didn’t find any research into this one though.
- Chamomile oil adds shine and softness to hair, and soothes the scalp. It is also said to be rich in vitamins E and C which assist in strengthening damaged hair.
So, another good one to give your head a little loving. I like this one.
Note 1: If your hair is especially oily, you might want to try adding some Peppermint to the mix. Do not however use this if you have a flaky or inflamed scalp.
Note 2: Sage is said to darken hair and Chamomile to lighten it. Granted this is over time but I would be careful if you have any dyes in your hair.
Blend 10 – Dandruff
As above, Lemongrass is proven to work against dandruff. So if you have it, ignore this next bit and mix it with some jojoba oil and massage into the skin for a natural dandruff remedy. Maybe add some cedarwood or lavender to moisturize the scalp as well. Alternatively, let’s try and keep that snow off the old shoulders with this manly dandruff blend:
Mix:
- 8 drops Cedarwood
- 8 drops Rosemary
- 6 drops Tea tree
- 1 teaspoon natural honey
- 20ml olive oil, almond or coconut oil
Use:
Massage into scalp and hair anywhere between once a day or three times a week whichever suits. Leave in for 20 minutes and wash out.
Did it work?
It didn’t not work, if that makes sense. It certainly doesn’t work immediately like many of those chemical laden dandruff shampoos. But I have to admit that I did spend a whole week with this sort of stuff in my hair so I might have to leave it a few weeks and get back to you. It should work though, based on the oils included. We have discussed Rosemary and Cedarwood already and Tea Tree contains the antifungal and antibacterial properties that fight against dandruff causing funguses. If is that fungai?
Note: Eucalyptus would also work as a Tea Tree substitute here.
Manly mood essential oil blends
Ok, last of all I have some mood blends. If you like them, it might just add that little emotional enhancement to your day. Don’t worry though, no one will know, it will just be our little man-secret. After all, it’s not like I can prove any of these next ones really work anyway hey!
Blend 11 – Energizer
A little pick-me-up
Mix:
- 4 drops Peppermint
- 3 drops Lemon
- 3 drops Orange
Use:
Roll onto wrists, neck and behind ears when you are feeling a little flat.
Did it work?
This is a very strong blend with the peppermint and citrus. I do find this one to do what it says.
Blend 12 – Mind clearing
Mix:
- 4 drops Lavender
- 4 drops Cedarwood
- 3 drops At Peace from Rocky Mountain Oils (Litsea Cubeba, Lime, Mandarin, Grapefruit, Ylang Ylang, Sandalwood, and Tangerine)
- Top up with Grapeseed oil (or 10 ml if not in a glass roller bottle)
Use:
Roll onto wrists, neck and behind ears to help calm you and clear the mind.
Did it work?
I don’t really like the aroma of this one, but I have left it in here as my wife swears by its abilities. And every now and then, us men do need a little assistance in this area, no matter how non-manly the aroma is.
Blend 13 – Concentration
Mix:
Use:
Roll onto wrists, neck and behind ears to when a little blast of concentration is needed.
Did it work?:
This is a favorite. I actually don’t mix it as above rather just open the two bottles and sniff them together. I included both of these oils in my post about using oils to stay awake. Here I am just mixing the two for the same result (and to ‘cut’ the Rosemary aroma a little).
Blend 14 – Calmer
Mix:
- 4 drops Frankincense
- 3 drops Lavender
- 3 drops At Peace from Rocky Mountain Oils (Litsea Cubeba, Lime, Mandarin, Grapefruit, Ylang Ylang, Sandalwood, and Tangerine)
- Top up with Grapeseed oil (or 10 ml if not in a glass roller bottle).
Use:
Roll onto wrists, neck and behind ears to calm the man-situation down
Did it work?
Absolutely! Especially on our son. It’s calming effects on him are something that has to be seen to be believed. Lavender and Frankincense alone will work just as well to be honest.
Blend 15 – Mood lifter
Just having a bad day and need a little mood shift?
Mix:
- 4 drops Frankincense
- 3 drops Bergamot
- 3 drops Orange
- Top up with Grapeseed oil (or 10 ml if not in a glass roller bottle)
Use:
Roll onto wrists, neck and behind ears to calm the man-situation down
Did it work?
I like this one as well. Has a ‘happy’ scent to it.
Conclusion
And there it is, another list of way too many oils and things to do with them. As always, have a look through and see what you think might be a good fit for you. Or do you have any blends that you are using already that I need to know about? If so, please do not hesitate to comment below – I will have to start finding prizes as bribes I think…
Anyway, as usual and until next time
Have fun
